Eternity – Are You Ready?
If the Lord Jesus does not come soon, we will all be going through “the valley of the shadow of death” (Psalm 23:4). Solomon writes in Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 that there is “a time to be born, and a time to die.” Just as there was a time we were born, there will be a time that we will die. This is one appointment we cannot escape. “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).
But what then? What about after death? Everybody has an opinion of what happens after death, but opinions aren’t the kind of things on which you stake your eternity. One must turn to the Bible to see what God says.
Here are some simple truths the Bible teaches regarding your future:
All Men Are Sinners
The Bible says in Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” This includes me and this includes you. We are sinners by nature. The sin of our first parents, Adam and Eve, plunged the entire human race into a sin nature. We are also sinners by choice. Often times, when given the choice between right and wrong, we choose the wrong.
Some will argue, “I may be bad, but I am not nearly as bad as that person!” While this may be true, our sinful condition has separated all of us from a holy and righteous God. There will be those who say, “I try my best to keep the 10 Commandments.” This is noble and honorable. But if I were to break one commandment only one time, I would be guilty of breaking all of the commandments. The Bible says in James 2:10, “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.”
Sin Must Be Paid For
The Bible says in Romans 6:23a, “For the wages of sin is death.” The word “wages” means payment. The payment for sin is death. This is more than being shot with a gun or dying of a terminal illness. This also means spiritual death. The Bible says in Revelation 20:14, “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.” If I, as a sinner, get what I deserve, because of my sin, I must spend eternity in hell paying for my sin.
The Good News Is That Jesus Paid For My Sin With His Death
The Bible says in Romans 5:8, “But God commendeth (demonstrated) his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Jesus, the Son of God, came to this earth to die on the cross to pay for our sins. Jesus suffered the penalty that I should have to pay. John 3:16 explains, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” God loves you so much that He gave His own Son, Jesus, to die and be resurrected three days later.
Will You Pray and Receive Christ By Faith As Your Savior?
Many people know about Jesus Christ. But will you come to know Him personally? Will you stop trusting yourself, your good works, your religion and completely depend upon Christ to save you? The Bible promises in Romans 10:13, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” God promises to you that if you call upon Him to save you from your sin, He will save you and give you “the gift…of eternal life” (Romans 6:23). You can make that decision this very moment, wherever you may be, by praying a prayer something like this:
Dear God, I know that I am a sinner and there is nothing I can do to save myself. I confess my sin to you and ask you to come into my heart and save me from the penalty of my sin. I am trusting in Jesus for eternal life.
